Bridging Passion with Expertise:
The Evolution of HelmetTec®
Brad Maloney
Founder and Managing Director
Brad Maloney’s journey blends his love for action sports with product development expertise. Starting from amateur motocross racing to winning professional jet ski championships, and later expert cross-country mountain bike races, he noticed a need for safer, better-performing helmets, which ignited his entrepreneurial spirit.
Venturing into industrial design, CAD, and manufacturing, Brad introduced his first innovation, Goggle Grip™, catering to jet ski racing in 2002 before adapting and expanding into the larger snow sport industry in 2008.
Simultaneously, his full-time career in orthopedic medical devices enhanced his understanding of body mechanics. He routinely learned and practiced arthroscopic surgical techniques to help aid doctors and nurses, and attended over 6,000 live surgeries from 2001-2012. Sharpening his technical skills inspired Brad to embrace entrepreneurship full-time, establishing Helmet Comp® in pursuit of partnering with brands to offer new helmet components made to order for OEM helmet design in 2012.
Still thinking about arthroscopic suture management and tightening methods, Brad set out to tackle more fundamental problems: the safety concerns arising from ill-fitted and uncomfortable helmets, how that makes the helmet unstable, and how that can limit the efficacy of the helmet’s safety features.
Brad often had issues finding a good-fitting, comfortable helmet. They either felt too loose, too tight, or had “hot spots” where certain areas of the head pressed firmly against the comfort liner. Other regions had “air gaps” with no surface contact to the comfort liner. He knew there had to be a better way of enhancing fit and comfort compared to industry standard 360° fit systems found in most helmets.
From 2015 to 2018, Brad developed and tested a variety of prototype comfort liners interlaced with a dial system in modified bicycle helmets to find a way to solve these fundamental problems. The progression led to IsoFit®, a revolutionary comfort liner fit system.
Concurrently, Brad was a part of the NFL Head Health Tech program from 2017 to 2020, studying NFL concussion data caused by rotational and linear impact energy, and utilized the NFL engineering roadmap to co-design, develop and test the HitGard® 2-piece football helmet shell technology.
Recognizing that the business was evolving from components to technologies, Brad rebranded the company HelmetTec® in 2024. Introducing new technologies, like IsoFit ® 2.0, H-Dial™ and continued research and development of the two-piece helmet shell concept, demonstrates innovation continuity.
IsoFit® has earned widespread recognition across industries. By seamlessly integrating his passion for sports with his technical expertise, Brad Maloney has redefined the standards of helmet innovation and established HelmetTec® as an innovative partner in next generation helmet technology. Brad works with strategic business partners and has ongoing supply chain relationships with manufacturers around the world.
